چکیده

Magnetic resonance (MR) diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) can resolve the white matter fiber orientation within a voxel provided that the fibers are strongly aligned. However, a given voxel may contain a distribution of fiber orientations due to, for example, intravoxel fiber crossing. The present study sought to test whether a geodesic, high b-value diffusion gradient sampling scheme could resolve multiple fiber orientations within a single voxel. In regions of fiber crossing the diffusion signal exhibited multiple local maxima/minima as a function of diffusion gradient orientation, indicating the presence of multiple intravoxel fiber orientations. The multimodality of the observed diffusion signal precluded the standard tensor reconstruction, so instead the diffusion signal was modeled as arising from a discrete mixture of Gaussian diffusion processes in slow exchange, and the underlying mixture of tensors was solved for using a gradient descent scheme. The multitensor reconstruction resolved multiple intravoxel fiber populations corresponding to known fiber anatomy. Ma

Determination of Fiber Direction in High Angular Resolution Diffusion Images using Spherical Harmonics Functions and Wiener Filter

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) MRI is a noninvasive imaging method of the cerebral tissues whose fibers directions are not evaluated correctly in the regions of the crossing fibers. For the same reason the high angular resolution diffusion images (HARDI) are used for estimation of the fiber direction in each voxel. One of the main methods to specify the direction of fibers is usage of the spher...

Computational Representation of White Matter Fiber Orientations

We present a new methodology based on directional data clustering to represent white matter fiber orientations in magnetic resonance analyses for high angular resolution diffusion imaging. A probabilistic methodology is proposed for estimating intravoxel principal fiber directions, based on clustering directional data arising from orientation distribution function (ODF) profiles. ODF reconstruc...

Q-ball reconstruction of multimodal fiber orientations using the spherical harmonic basis.

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) accurately delineates white matter pathways when the Gaussian model of diffusion is valid. However, DTI yields erroneous results when diffusion takes on a more complex distribution, as is the case in the brain when fiber tracts cross. High angular resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI) overcomes this limitation of DTI by more fully characterizing the angular depende...

Tensor Distribution Function in Multiple Shell High Angular Resolution Diffusion Imaging

Introduction: DTI reveals white matter microstructure and fiber pathways in the living brain by examining the 3D diffusion profile of water molecules in brain tissue. Even so, DTI-derived measures will be incorrect where fibers cross or mix, as the single tensor model cannot resolve these more complicated white matter configurations. This issue can be addressed using the model-free diffusion sp...

Diffusion Simulation Tractography for High Angular Resolution Diffusion Imaging

Introduction While the standard diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) approach has proven to be a valuable tool in detecting local tissue structure and reconstructing neural fiber networks in brain, it cannot accurately reveal the white matter structure in the presence of multiple fiber orientations within a single voxel. In particular, for crossed fibers, the second-order diffusion tensor model fails...
